Imagination Technologies has taken a further step in an ongoing divestment plan by selling its IMGworks subsidiary to engineering consultancy Sondrel for an undisclosed sum.

IMGworks provides bespoke and platform-based SoC design and software integration such as device driver porting, OS integration and system optimization.

The deal will lift the headcount of Sondrel’s design services operation to more than 250. The company has design centers in Europe, Asia and North Africa.

UK-based Sondrel’s existing focus areas are ADAS, AI and machine vision/learning. The IMGworks team adds expertise in related areas in graphics, GPU and video processing.

“Video and graphics related business is going through a steep growth curve, driven not only by gaming and infotainment systems but also by the accelerated computational needs of the AI environment that enables many of the new automotive, enterprise cloud and IoT related products,” said Sondrel CEO Graham Curren.

Imagination put IMGworks on the block last year, along with its Pure consumer electronics division.  Earlier this month, it disclosed a further effort to reverse its diversification beyond graphics IP by also seeking buyers for its MIPS processor and Ensigma communications cores businesses.

The divestment plan follows Imagination’s loss of Apple as a major client.
